Official Portrait Workshop from Life

​

This five-day intensive workshop focuses on the creation of an official portrait limited to head and shoulders, following a classical and structured approach.

During the first phase of the workshop, students will learn how to analyse the sitter’s personality and presence in order to build a coherent and dignified portrait. Emphasis will be placed on composition, pose, background selection, and the clarity of the visual narrative. Students will develop preparatory sketches and advance into a precise drawing phase, with close guidance to ensure accuracy of proportions and likeness.

The second phase transitions from drawing to painting. Students will learn how to mix colours using a controlled palette and apply a thin oil wash to establish a solid pictorial foundation. The portrait will then be developed progressively, with particular attention to flesh tones, edges, values, brushwork, and depth. The objective is to achieve a refined and expressive portrait that conveys both physical resemblance and psychological presence.

Recommended Level

Students should have prior experience in drawing and painting from life.
